About the
Cornish Association of Queensland

The Cornish Association of Queensland was formed by 16 persons on 6 October 1994, as a branch of the Cornish Association of New South Wales. Since then our membership has grown beyond anyone's expectations.

At its First General Meeting held on 4 March 1995, the CAQ formally separated from the CANSW and adopted its own Rules of Association. The CAQ is now an independent association and the CAQ banner flew proudly for the first time with those of the other State Associations taking part in the great 1995 Kernewek Lowender festival at Moonta in South Australia.

The objects of the CAQ are to:

  • stimulate interest in the history of Cornwall, its Celtic cultural and linguistic heritage
  • promote fellowship and goodwill among Queensland people of Cornish birth, descent or interest
  • provide current social, cultural and economic information about contemporary Cornwall
  • provide Cornish social and cultural contact for people of Cornish descent tracing their ancestry
  • identify and preserve the heritage of the Cornish part in Queensland's historical development
  • encourage social and cultural interaction with members of other Celtic groups in Queensland
  • foster links between Cornish people throughout Australia and the rest of the world.

CAQ welcomes everyone who Cornish born, of Cornish descent, or just loves Cornwall. We provide fellowship at the various Cornish-related social and cultural functions. Members receive the CAQ's bimonthly newsletter Newodhow Kernewek (Cornish News) and can borrow books, videos and audio cassettes free of charge from the CAQ library.
